Yale's German department has consistently ranked among the top programs in the nation. The curriculum focuses on developing analytical reading skills through examination of both classic and lesser-known German literary works, while also promoting interdisciplinary studies in areas like critical theory, philosophy, comparative literature, history of science and law, and political thought. The department places particular emphasis on film and media studies, especially through its German/Film program. The graduate program requires students to complete 16 courses over four semesters, taking four classes per term. Three courses may be audited, with GMAN 501 (Methods of Teaching German as a World Language) being mandatory for all students. Course selections must be approved by the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS), who also oversees potential Directed Readings courses supervised by faculty members.
