The Department of Germanic Studies stands as one of the nation's most expansive and varied academic units, blending conventional scope with innovative cross-disciplinary methodologies. Our programs offer undergraduate and graduate scholars a thorough grounding in the languages, literature, and cultural traditions of German-speaking regions, while addressing their evolving multicultural and global dimensions. We dedicate ourselves to equipping all learners—from language requirement students to degree candidates—with enhanced linguistic insights and cultural awareness essential for our interconnected world.
While many academic departments are downsizing or narrowing their focus, we uphold the value of foundational studies, stressing historical perspectives in cultural education and the vital connection between language mastery and cultural understanding. Beyond conventional national literature and culture studies, our Department actively collaborates with programs including Digital Humanities, Gender Studies, European Studies, Comparative Literature, Jewish Studies, Language Education, and Medieval Studies. Faculty members frequently engage with departments like Linguistics and Media Studies. Our curriculum and research span all eras of literary and cultural development, alongside interdisciplinary concentrations such as linguistic theory, language instruction, cinema studies, gender research, philosophical history, cultural analysis, German-Jewish scholarship, and Nordic studies.
