The German Studies program at the University of Michigan stands out as one of the nation's most forward-thinking Ph.D. initiatives, distinguished by its exceptional dedication to cross-disciplinary approaches. Our department provides an academically rigorous curriculum with extensive scope across multiple disciplines. The graduate program ensures mastery of fundamental competencies in German Studies through a structured course sequence. Candidates complete coursework across diverse curricular categories, ensuring comprehensive engagement with various specialized fields within the discipline. All doctoral candidates receive comprehensive five-year funding (covering fall, winter, and spring/summer terms), including fellowships, teaching appointments, and institutional support. Benefits extend to health coverage, access to outstanding library resources, and an intellectually stimulating environment that fosters academic growth. The department proactively supports students in obtaining supplementary funding through both university and external grants. While primary coursework should be completed within the German Department, students have opportunities to pursue interdisciplinary Graduate Certificates in areas such as LGBTQ Studies, Museum Studies, Film/Television/Media, and Women's/Gender Studies. The University of Michigan permits joint Ph.D. programs combining German Studies with another discipline, which can be arranged after the first semester with approval from both departments. While several German Studies Ph.D. candidates have successfully established such combined programs historically, this option remains subject to departmental approval and cannot be assured beforehand.
