Secondary social studies education offers a distinctive chance to explore global histories, foster social and cultural awareness, and enhance civic knowledge and participation. WVU's Social Studies/Secondary Education program combines multiple disciplines, giving students a wide-ranging foundation through introductory courses in history, geography, economics, political science, psychology, sociology, and anthropology. The curriculum also includes specialized instruction in teaching methods, featuring advanced social studies coursework and professional education classes with extensive fieldwork in local schools—observing, tutoring, and student teaching. Through structured, evaluated learning experiences, students gain exposure to diverse social studies methodologies while honing advanced research and communication abilities. While most program graduates become secondary school educators, others continue their studies in history, public administration, educational leadership, or special education.
