The MS program focuses on counseling within community and agency environments, particularly in university and college counseling centers. This master's program prioritizes practical service delivery, with its practicum and internship components reinforcing this focus. The coursework highlights skill development in areas like individual and group counseling, consultation, research methods, ethical practices, multicultural competence, social justice advocacy, and career psychology. Hands-on training opportunities are provided through the program's clinic, university counseling services, community mental health facilities, and various other campus departments and local organizations. Graduates are equipped for professional roles primarily in community agencies, higher education institutions, and corporate settings. The curriculum meets Wisconsin's academic prerequisites for professional counselor licensure.
Required courses, labs, and fieldwork can be scheduled for full-time or part-time students, though part-time attendees must carefully plan their course sequence. Full-time students generally finish the program within two years, including summer coursework.
International applicants must have a degree comparable to a regionally accredited U.S. bachelor’s degree.
