The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering provides graduate programs culminating in Master of Engineering (M.E.), Master of Science (M.S.), and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering. The M.S. program emphasizes research and culminates with a thesis defense, whereas the M.E. is a coursework-only option available both on-campus and online via VIRGINIA ENGINEERING ONLINE. Students can transition directly from a bachelor's to a Ph.D. program, with the opportunity to obtain an M.E. or M.S. degree along the way. Renowned in both industry and academia, our electrical engineering program produces exceptional engineers and researchers. Faculty uphold this standard by continuously modernizing curricula to align with scientific progress and technological demands, while conducting cutting-edge interdisciplinary research that equips students with advanced skills addressing societal challenges. Alumni have secured positions at leading companies like Apple, Amazon, BAE Systems, Booz Allen Hamilton, Corning, Meta, General Electric, General Motors, Google, Halliburton, Intel Research, Microsoft Research, NVIDIA Research, Northrop-Grumman, Oracle, Qualcomm, and Samsung Research, as well as government research institutions including the Air Force Research Laboratory, Army Research Laboratory, NASA, NIST, and the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
