MESALC's interdisciplinary MA program is designed for graduate students pursuing advanced study in Middle Eastern or South Asian languages alongside comprehensive regional expertise. Our graduates often leverage this degree either as preparation for doctoral studies or to gain essential qualifications for careers in governmental and non-governmental sectors. The Middle Eastern and South Asian Studies MA prioritizes linguistic proficiency and cultural understanding, aiming to cultivate perspectives that grasp these regions from local viewpoints. Candidates select either the Middle East or South Asia as their geographic concentration, paired with a regional language (Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, Hindi, Urdu, or Sanskrit). Applicants focusing on the Middle East with Arabic specialization must demonstrate intermediate proficiency, while Persian and Hebrew tracks welcome beginners. The South Asia program requires no prior language experience.
