The Department of Religion's Jewish studies program emphasizes key areas such as textual analysis and hermeneutics spanning from ancient times to today, medieval and modern philosophical and mystical traditions, along with cultural studies, political theory, and gender perspectives. While Judaism is studied as a distinct specialization, students are encouraged to pursue comparative research within the department. Beyond the Religious Studies faculty, UCSB's Jewish Studies program collaborates with seventeen affiliated professors across nine departments—including History, Germanic and Slavic Studies, Comparative Literature, and more—offering diverse academic perspectives. Students are urged to leverage these interdisciplinary resources to develop a multifaceted approach to their graduate studies. Proficiency in Hebrew and at least one additional relevant research language (such as Greek, Latin, Arabic, or Yiddish) is required for admission to the graduate program in Jewish studies.
