The Master of Science in Sustainable Design focuses on research rather than professional design practice. This program is ideal for students aiming to pursue a Ph.D., become sustainability consultants in the architecture and engineering sector, or engage in public policy and advocacy for sustainable architecture and urbanism. While a background in architecture or design is beneficial, it's not mandatory.
In the MSSD program, students typically conduct independent research rather than joining predefined teams. Thesis advisors are chosen by students during their first year. The admission process is standardized, meaning faculty cannot directly accept students, and applicants cannot prearrange their thesis committees. Financial support is merit-based, with no full scholarships offered at this time. Enrollment begins exclusively in the Fall semester, and teaching or research assistant opportunities become available after completing the first year.
Students must have a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or a comparable degree from a foreign academic institution. A grade point average of at least 3.00 in upper-division (junior- and senior-level) coursework and in any graduate work already completed.
The minimum scores considered acceptable for admission by the Graduate School are:
TOEFL: 79 on the Internet-based test (iBT)
IELTS: An overall band of 6.5 on the Academic Examination
Application deadline: December 16 for fall
