Students who have earned their M.A. degree in the department and intend to continue with a Ph.D. must apply for the doctoral program in the semester immediately after receiving their master's degree. (Those taking a break after their M.A. should submit their Ph.D. application as soon as they resume studies at the University.) Applicants must submit a Request for Ph.D. Program Admission form to the Graduate Studies Steering Committee (GSSC) for review. Individuals who joined the department with a master's degree from another institution should consult the Graduate Advisor about their program status upon arrival. Direct-entry Ph.D. students must establish an examination committee within their first academic year and follow the same admission process as master's students transitioning to the Ph.D. program. Doctoral candidates must complete 18 credit hours of coursework, with a minimum of 9 credits in Anthropology core subjects. Credits earned during UT's Anthropology M.A. program will apply toward the Ph.D. requirements.
The University of Texas at Austin's Department of Anthropology provides an extensive program combining research, instruction, and public outreach. Leveraging its established foundations in archaeology, linguistic anthropology, biological anthropology, and sociocultural anthropology, the department seeks to comprehend and respond to the complexities of our diverse, interconnected, and rapidly evolving world.
