The Doctoral Program in Anthropology and History involves approximately sixty faculty members from History and Anthropology, along with scholars from departments such as African and Afroamerican Studies, Asian Languages & Cultures, Comparative Literature, Middle East Studies, Sociology, Women's Studies, and various professional schools. This initiative strengthens and uniquely enhances the University of Michigan's longstanding commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration. The institution actively fosters cross-disciplinary research across all academic fields, offering funding to Program faculty and students to organize working groups, conferences, and lectures that unite diverse perspectives. Graduate-level seminars in the two core departments draw participants from numerous other disciplines. The Program's flagship year-long offering, the Core Seminar in Anthropology and History, spans from January to December, combining a reading-intensive phase with a research-focused segment later in the year. While mandatory for Program students, this seminar also welcomes graduate students from other departments with instructor approval.
