The Anthropology and Population specialization is a distinct pathway within Brown University's doctoral program in anthropology. Applicants submit standard admission materials through the Graduate School's Anthropology department while specifying their focus on this track in their personal statement. Doctoral candidates must complete all standard anthropology degree requirements along with supplementary coursework. Mandatory classes include: Anthropological Demography (ANTH 2300), Research Methods in Anthropology (ANTH 2020), and Population Principles (SOC 2080). Additionally, students must enroll in one population-focused course outside their home department. The Anthropology Department fosters a dynamic academic environment where faculty, scholars, and staff explore human societies throughout history. Brown's socio-cultural and linguistic anthropologists conduct ethnographic research worldwide, while archaeological faculty specialize in analyzing material culture from ancient to contemporary American societies.
