Students who have earned their M.A. degree in the department and intend to continue with a Ph.D. must apply for the doctoral program in the semester immediately after receiving their master's degree. (Those taking a leave after their M.A. should apply for Ph.D. program admission as soon as they return to the University.) Applicants must submit a Request for Ph.D. Program Admission form to the Graduate Studies Steering Committee (GSSC) for review. Students who joined the department with a master's degree from another institution should consult the Graduate Advisor about their program status upon arrival. Direct-entry Ph.D. students must establish an examination committee within their first year and follow the same admission process as master's students transitioning to the Ph.D. program. The Ph.D. requires 18 credit hours of coursework, with a minimum of 9 hours in Anthropology core classes. Credits from UT's Anthropology M.A. program apply toward the doctoral requirements.
