The UNC School of Medicine (SOM) has earned widespread acclaim for successfully combining exceptional clinical training with robust support for world-class, well-funded research initiatives spanning basic, translational, and clinical sciences. MD-PhD candidates at our institution benefit from training under a distinguished faculty whose research expertise ranges from fundamental biological investigations to applied clinical studies and healthcare delivery research. UNC cultivates an interdisciplinary research culture where collaboration across departments and schools is both routine and celebrated. Simultaneously, the institution maintains an unwavering dedication to educating exceptional medical practitioners. These equally prioritized strengths make UNC the perfect setting for students pursuing dual-degree training through our cutting-edge MD-PhD Program.

This exceptional academic ecosystem is strengthened by having all five Health Affairs Schools (Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health, and Medicine) located on one interconnected campus, along with their close adjacency to the College of Arts and Sciences. Notably, UNC stands among just four public universities nationwide housing all five of these top-tier Health Affairs Schools, each ranking among the nation's leaders in NIH funding. This physical closeness encourages continuous interdisciplinary partnerships among researchers from diverse fields. We have consistently leveraged this unique advantage to create varied research pathways for aspiring physician-scientists.
