Students in the M.D./Ph.D. program typically transition to the Ph.D. phase following the foundational science years of their medical studies. In their second year of medical training, they should consult with faculty about the Biophysics Ph.D. Program to strategically prepare for doctoral research. Course requirements for M.D./Ph.D. candidates are customized through collaboration between the student, advisor, and the Program's Graduate Studies Director, considering prior academic experience. These students are also exempt from teaching assistant obligations.
Rochester's Medical Scientist Training Program boasts a distinguished legacy of educating physician-scientists, celebrating 65 years of training and 50 years of uninterrupted NIH support during the 2023-2024 academic year. Our program champions a comprehensive, evidence-driven methodology, reflected in the medical school's adoption of George Engel's biopsychosocial medical model and the innovative Double Helix Curriculum. This approach ensures medical students receive continuous exposure to both scientific principles and clinical practice across all four years. The MD/PhD program further enhances this integration by weaving research components throughout, featuring lab rotations, the Scientific Reasoning in Medicine journal club, seminar dinners, Medical Scientist Research Symposia, annual retreats, regional student conferences, and involvement with the American Physician Scientist Association.
