Founded in 1967, the University of Chicago's Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) ranks among the nation's oldest and most established physician-scientist training initiatives. This program caters to aspiring biomedical researchers who aim to combine clinical practice with scientific investigation to address critical challenges in medical science. With a distinguished legacy, the MSTP has consistently produced graduates who hold prominent leadership roles in academic medicine across top research institutions. MeSH candidates generally commence with two initial years of graduate studies, followed by 1-3 years of medical school before returning to complete their PhD. After obtaining their doctorate, students resume medical training to finalize their MD requirements. This structured approach enables MeSH participants to efficiently complete their graduate education while maintaining continuity in their medical studies.

Applicants from a three-year bachelor’s program will be given due consideration. Because all of our programs feature competitive admission, no particular academic degree or background will guarantee admission to one of our graduate divisions.
