The Epidemiology doctoral program focuses on public health and population-based studies. Candidates employ epidemiological techniques to investigate intricate health challenges. The PhD involves two years of classes plus a minimum of two years dedicated to research. Participants must undergo teaching preparation and assist with method-based and subject-specific courses. Requirements also include passing a written comprehensive test, a mock oral examination, preliminary assessments, numerous oral and poster presentations, plus a culminating dissertation with its presentation and defense. The Infectious Disease specialization enhances the core epidemiology program by providing essential expertise in disease patterns, analytical and lab techniques, immune system science, and pathogen characteristics to comprehend interactions between infectious organisms and their hosts, carriers, and surroundings. Professors and scholars examine optimal approaches for detecting and quantifying infections, analyzing spread patterns, and creating/evaluating prevention and treatment initiatives for both emerging and persistent infectious illnesses including HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C, HPV, malaria, measles, TB, flu, and COVID-19.
Program participants gain from instruction in microbiology and immunology, epidemiological approaches and statistical evaluation, alongside diverse infectious disease courses available through the Epidemiology Department and other school divisions. Students can participate in domestic and global research initiatives guided by Infectious Disease Epidemiology faculty members.
