We aim to attract outstanding PhD scientists in biological sciences for an intensive 3-year MD program at Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons, designed to prepare them for careers in biomedical research. While PhD training typically involves deep specialization—often summarized as knowing increasingly more about increasingly less—medical education offers a unique complement by blending broad clinical knowledge with scientific depth. For dedicated researchers aspiring to create meaningful human impact, medicine provides unparalleled opportunities to study our species, the most extensively examined "model organism," with phenotypes meticulously documented through centuries of physician-patient interactions. Additionally, medical training cultivates a scientist's most crucial skill: identifying significant questions. Though traditional MD-PhD programs (MST programs) share this goal of developing biomedical researchers, fewer than half of their graduates remain active in research, with even fewer becoming leading investigators. Our ideal candidates are those who began with a passion for science, demonstrated research potential through exceptional PhD work, find excitement in basic discoveries, yet now feel driven to apply their knowledge more directly to improve human health.
