The M.D./Ph.D. Program offers an exceptional opportunity for dedicated and highly qualified students to pursue combined clinical and biomedical research training, culminating in both medical and doctoral degrees. This integrated program equips graduates with the expertise to excel in both clinical practice and scientific investigation. Participants begin with the first two years of medical school, including passing the USMLE Step 1 examination, before transitioning to Ph.D. studies. Candidates must gain admission to either UTHSC's Graduate Health Sciences Ph.D. program or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital's doctoral program, usually in their second year of medical studies. After successfully defending their dissertation, students complete the remaining clinical requirements for their medical degree.
