The University of Nevada, Reno's counseling program aims to train skilled, ethically grounded counselors with cultural competence, preparing them to deliver outstanding services across public and private sectors to serve our growing diverse population. The Marriage, Couple and Family Counseling (MCFC) specialization is a 67-credit CACREP-accredited program that equips graduates to address diverse family dynamics and relationship challenges. Students gain comprehensive training in systems theory, both conceptually and practically, alongside hands-on experience. Additionally, graduate students can complete internships at the Downing Counseling Clinic, a community-focused, affordable service center housed in the College of Education and Human Development.
From enrollment to graduation, students will embody the professional qualities, attitudes, and behaviors the program identifies as exemplary for counseling professionals.
Students will show proficiency in applying ethical and legal principles in counseling, consistently incorporating professional ethics into their daily practice.
Aligned with ACA multicultural standards, students will cultivate self-awareness, knowledge, and practical skills to become culturally responsive practitioners in clinical, family, and school counseling environments.
Students will master lifespan development concepts and demonstrate the ability to apply developmental theories effectively in their professional work.
