The Master of Education in Special Education equips graduates to support individuals with disabilities across diverse age groups (5-21), abilities, and learning environments in both schools and community settings. There's a critical demand for special education professionals, particularly in urban centers such as Chicago. Studies show this teacher shortage most severely impacts minority populations, especially in urban districts serving predominantly African American and Latina/o/x students. Special educators practice in various educational and community-based settings.
Participants complete a master's degree with the option to pursue initial Illinois licensure and additional credentials. The program accommodates career-changers, current teachers transitioning to special education, practicing special educators, and those seeking advanced knowledge in the field.
