The Department of Special Education offers Master's degree and credential programs focused on professional training in special education. These programs prepare specialists for careers in early intervention programs, schools, rehabilitation centers, or community organizations serving individuals with disabilities. The curriculum integrates resources from general education, psychology, counseling, and related human service disciplines. The Master of Arts in Special Education features a customized program structure, emphasizing research and leadership development within a specialized area of study. Graduates are equipped for careers in educational institutions and private organizations serving individuals with disabilities, as well as other human service sectors. Departmental programs enable students to engage with faculty-led research initiatives, demonstration projects, training programs, and special projects. Specializations include autism spectrum disorders, early childhood special education, mild-to-moderate support needs, extensive support needs, orientation and mobility, and visual impairment.

Qualification Requirements

To meet the minimum eligibility standards for graduate study at San Francisco State, an applicant must:

1.Hold a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution, or shall have completed equivalent academic preparation as determined by the appropriate campus authority,

2.be in good academic standing at the last college or university attended,

3.Have a 3.0 GPA or better in their earned undergraduate degree or the last 60-semester (90-quarter) units completed, or have earned a post-baccalaureate degree, and

4.Meet the professional, personal, scholastic, and other standards for graduate study, including qualifying examinations, as appropriate campus authorities may prescribe. In unusual circumstances, a campus may make exceptions to these criteria.
