The Department of Entomology provides diverse academic programs and research opportunities for both Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy candidates. We aim to equip aspiring scientists with comprehensive knowledge in insect biology, preparing them for careers in federal, state, or industrial labs, as well as academic settings. Our curriculum spans biological studies from molecular processes to entire ecosystems. Alongside traditional entomological training, we focus on specialized fields like Insect/Plant Relationships, Biological Pest Control, and Molecular Entomology. We're particularly proud of our students' academic growth and the caliber of their research contributions. Prospective students are welcome to tour our facilities and interact with faculty and current graduate students to experience our program firsthand.
Our department provides graduate programs culminating in the MPPPM (Master of Plant Protection and Pest Management), MS, and PhD degrees. The MPPPM is a coursework-based program involving graduate-level classes, two internship semesters, and elective courses. The MS and PhD degrees require both coursework and original research culminating in a thesis or dissertation. While most students begin with the MS program after completing their bachelor's degree, exceptional candidates may petition to pursue the PhD directly after meeting departmental criteria. Research opportunities extend beyond our Athens campus, with faculty guidance available at our Griffin and Tifton locations as well.
