The Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS) program offers an interdisciplinary approach for students to explore key topics across social sciences and humanities by thoroughly examining the history, cultures, economies, governance, and ecosystems of Latin America and the Caribbean. Beyond acquiring specialized knowledge of a region deeply connected to Chicago and the U.S., LACS students enhance their language abilities, research techniques, and analytical thinking, with many undertaking extended study or fieldwork in Latin America. Program requirements consist of: academic coursework, demonstrated proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese, hands-on learning experiences designed to expand students' understanding of Latin American and Caribbean viewpoints while strengthening cultural awareness, plus a senior-year BA colloquium and culminating project that fosters independent, innovative, and thorough research. Students have access to numerous interdisciplinary courses annually and benefit from personalized guidance from our committed faculty. The Center for Latin American Studies enriches the curriculum with numerous public events each year, fostering a vibrant academic community. Additionally, the program highlights Chicago's identity as a profoundly Latin American metropolis and equips students for professional paths in public service, media, legal fields, commerce, education, nonprofits, or scholarly research.
