African American Studies is an interdisciplinary field that investigates the experiences, traditions, and sociopolitical involvement of African-descended communities in the U.S. The certificate program's curriculum enables students to examine diverse historical and modern topics affecting African Americans, as well as immigrants from Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America. Our classes analyze evolving social identities, racial dynamics, family structures, activism, artistic expression, and diaspora concepts within Black communities.
As the foundational field of Ethnic Studies, African American Studies holds historical significance both at our institution and in the broader push for inclusive education nationwide. This discipline combines rigorous analysis, innovative solutions, and practical applications that extend beyond academia to serve society.
Earning an African American Studies certificate equips graduates for professional roles involving diverse populations, spanning education, public service, media, healthcare, law, arts, and research sectors both domestically and internationally.
