African American Studies explores the history, culture, politics, economics, and societal evolution of individuals of African heritage. Our approach views African America as an integral component of the global African Diaspora. We analyze the unique modes of expression and activism among African descendants in North America within the broader framework of Black communities worldwide, encompassing regions like the Caribbean and Latin America. This field excels in cross-cultural examination, offering a comprehensive, comparative, and interdisciplinary academic program.
Students gain insight into African American and diasporic Black experiences while examining their connections to Latinx, Asian, Indigenous, and other marginalized North American communities. The curriculum emphasizes social justice—studying the legacies of enslavement, colonial rule, racial segregation, economic oppression, and the persistent resistance movements for civil and human rights. As a multidisciplinary discipline, it cultivates independent research skills applicable to diverse fields including history, literature, political science, sociology, psychology, and legal studies.
