The American Indigenous Studies program launched in autumn 2009 through the College (then known as the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences). Developed in collaboration with the American Indian Affairs office, the planned American Indian Cultural Center, and the Native American Student Association, this initiative serves as a foundation for fostering an inclusive campus atmosphere for Native American students and academics.
American Indigenous Studies represents an interdisciplinary curriculum drawing from multiple Minnesota State Mankato departments, primarily within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. AIS delivers a comprehensive, cross-disciplinary perspective on Native American communities, with particular emphasis on the Dakota people, exploring their traditions across historical, contemporary, and future contexts. The program invites all students—both Indigenous and non-Indigenous—to engage with Native American cultures, languages, histories, governance systems, media representations, and related subjects. AIS equips learners for advanced academic pursuits and professional opportunities within tribal communities or multicultural environments.
At Minnesota State University, Mankato, the American Indigenous Studies program provides both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degree options. The program features a core faculty team supplemented by affiliated instructors from various departments such as Sociology, Criminal Justice, English, History, Anthropology, and Social Work.
