The American studies program provides students with an in-depth exploration of the forces, narratives, and connections that define North American societies throughout history and today.
Graduates can pursue diverse career paths in cultural institutions, legal fields, public service, park management, arts administration, nonprofit work, and academia. The program features specialized tracks including Western American studies, borderland regions, historical analysis, literary traditions, folk culture, visual arts studies, and environmental humanities, enabling students to design interdisciplinary academic journeys. While administratively part of the English Department, the curriculum incorporates courses from various disciplines across the university. Additionally, students select an 18-credit concentration (which may double as a minor) in approved arts, humanities, or social science subjects. The program facilitates professional development through extensive domestic and global internship options across multiple disciplines. Upon finishing all major requirements, students earn a degree. Bachelor of Arts candidates must additionally demonstrate competency in at least one foreign language.
