Geography explores the patterns and processes shaping Earth's surface. This expansive discipline encompasses diverse topics within our department, from glaciers and climate shifts to agricultural origins and urban cultures, as well as global economic systems.
This breadth allows students exceptional flexibility in selecting research subjects, cultivating their intellectual approach, and choosing methods for collecting data and constructing compelling cases. Students can also venture beyond departmental boundaries to leverage the university's vast resources. We aim to guide each student in discovering their unique blend of scholarly precision, innovation, and self-direction.
The curriculum focuses on three primary fields:
Global Development and Political Economy
Earth System Science
Geospatial Representation and Analysis
These areas incorporate diverse faculty expertise, spanning political ecology, economic and cultural geography, post-colonial research, urban studies, race and gender geography, climatology, landform studies, remote sensing, and GIS. Faculty members also bring specialized regional knowledge, covering Africa, South and East Asia, the Arctic, the Everglades and Mississippi Delta, Brazil, the Caribbean, and Latin America.
The minimum graduate admission requirements are: bachelor’s degree or recognized equivalent from an accredited institution; satisfactory scholastic average, usually a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B) on a 4.0 scale; and enough undergraduate training to do graduate work in your chosen field.
Applicants admitted to a doctoral program that requires a master’s degree to be earned at Berkeley as a prerequisite (even though the applicant already has a master’s degree from another institution in the same or a closely allied field of study) will be permitted to undertake the second master’s degree, despite the overlap in field.
