The Geography Ph.D. is an advanced research degree designed to equip graduates for careers in academic, governmental, corporate, and nonprofit fields, with successful alumni in all these areas. Under faculty guidance, students develop and execute independent research projects. The 72-credit requirement allows up to 24 transfer credits from a master's program. Initial years typically involve specialized coursework and comprehensive exam preparation, followed by dissertation research requiring at least 24 credits.
Our Geography faculty bring diverse interdisciplinary expertise across human geography, environmental studies, and physical geography, enhanced by cutting-edge tools like GIS, remote sensing, computational modeling, and data analysis. A master's degree in geography or a related discipline is required for admission into the geography Ph.D. program.
