The geography doctoral program enables students to specialize in diverse areas including human geography, nature-society relations, community geography, physical geography, and geospatial techniques. Each year, we admit a select cohort of doctoral candidates who receive personalized mentorship from faculty in publishing, securing grants, conducting fieldwork, and teaching. We are deeply committed to developing our students as both researchers and educators. All doctoral candidates receive full financial support. Our intimate graduate seminars offer comprehensive training in both fundamental principles and emerging trends within the field. We collaborate closely with students to design original, rigorous research initiatives that equip them for academic careers and other professional paths. Doctoral candidates gain valuable teaching experience through assistantships and independent course instruction. Our alumni secure faculty positions in geography and related fields, as well as pursue careers across nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and private industry. The department maintains a strong history of successfully placing graduates in academic roles.
