A Ph.D. differs significantly from a master's degree. Geography doctoral students must demonstrate the ability to produce original scholarly contributions. Such achievements typically require focused study within a specific, well-defined area. However, we mandate that Ph.D. candidates possess broader geographical knowledge beyond their specialization. Consequently, applicants must complete master's-level training or equivalent preparation before qualifying for doctoral studies. Essentially, doctoral admission confirms a student's satisfactory grasp of geography's fundamental breadth, enabling them to subsequently concentrate on deepening expertise in selected specializations.
Geography doctorate requirements surpass master's degree standards in both rigor and complexity. Yet the doctoral program's adaptable structure permits advanced scholars to customize their studies according to individual academic interests and professional objectives.
Students with a 3.00 junior/senior grade-point average (on a 4.00 scale) and with appropriate course work in geography or a related discipline will be considered for admission to the M.S. program or to the five-year Ph.D. program. Applicants with master's degrees from high-quality graduate programs in geography will be considered for admission to the four-year doctoral program.
