The Oral Medicine postgraduate program is a rigorous two-year, full-time interdisciplinary certificate course, with an optional third year to earn a Master of Science degree. ADA Commission on Dental Accreditation-approved, this program accepts two new candidates annually starting each July. It builds upon foundational dental education by teaching evidence-based approaches to diagnosing and managing oral diseases, including specialized care for patients with complex medical conditions.
Students engage with an extensive didactic curriculum through Tufts University School of Dental Medicine's Advanced Education Program, meeting both ADA and American Academy of Oral Medicine requirements. Clinical instruction occurs in the Oral Medicine Clinic at Tufts, where residents receive personalized training in cutting-edge diagnostic and therapeutic techniques. The teaching team includes dental specialists, medical doctors, and allied health professionals like nutritionists and psychologists. Additionally, residents gain hospital experience at Tufts Medical Center, working with patients across specialties including hematology, oncology, and dermatology. Weekly tumor board meetings and comprehensive patient management—spanning both inpatient and outpatient settings—form key components of this training.
