The epidemiology program focuses on health disparities as a central theme across local, national, and international contexts through classroom instruction, practical experiences, and hands-on research culminating in a thesis. Students complete foundational coursework in epidemiology, health disparities research, and introductory concentration studies before selecting one of three specialized tracks for their elective courses and thesis work. Our program equips students to: grasp the fundamentals of social justice and health equity, identify biological, social, and economic factors influencing health disparities worldwide, gain rigorous scientific training in epidemiological theory and policy, apply epidemiological techniques to investigate health disparities, appreciate the value of community-based research in reducing health inequities, and learn strategies to address disparities in prevalent health conditions.
The Infectious Disease Epidemiology specialization offers comprehensive education in epidemiological concepts related to microbial, viral, and parasitic diseases, including diagnostic and treatment approaches, disease surveillance, transmission patterns, eradication methods, global and local infectious disease disparities, and statistical modeling of disease trends. This concentration prepares future scientists to collaborate across disciplines to reduce the burden of infectious diseases and associated health inequities.
