The Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies program explores the rich civilizations that thrived around the Mediterranean, encompassing the Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, and Near Eastern societies. This interdisciplinary field examines their languages, literature, history, governance, religious beliefs, philosophical traditions, and physical artifacts. Students are strongly advised to engage in Penn State's study abroad initiatives or archaeological excavations within the Mediterranean region. The AMA Option mandates completion of approved fieldwork, while up to 15 credits from relevant international courses can count toward major requirements.
Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies (CAMS) focuses on analyzing the diverse cultures that emerged across the Mediterranean region - from Egypt and Greece to Rome, Anatolia, Israel, Mesopotamia, and North Africa - spanning from Mesopotamian origins (circa 4000 BCE) through late antiquity (around 600 CE). CAMS provides comprehensive training in interpreting both linguistic records and archaeological findings from these foundational ancient societies.
