The Classical Civilization concentration within the Major is designed for students interested in exploring classical literature and culture without mandatory study of original languages. The curriculum examines ancient Greek and Roman societies, along with other Mediterranean civilizations like the Egyptians and Hittites. Students engage with translated masterpieces of epic poetry, historical texts, philosophical works, religious writings, dramatic plays, and rhetorical speeches. The program additionally includes courses on mythology and archaeological studies. While not required, many Classical Civilization students choose to enroll in introductory ancient Greek or Latin language courses for one or two semesters.
