The discipline of Classics explores Greek and Roman civilizations spanning from prehistoric times through the Middle Ages. Undergraduate students primarily focus on mastering Greek or Latin (or both) to proficiently read ancient texts in their original languages. By examining classical literature both in its original form and English translations, along with other classical subjects like ancient history, philosophy, art history, mythology, and rhetoric, students develop insights into the cultural values of antiquity and their lasting impact on Western languages and traditions.
The department provides a Bachelor of Arts in Classics. Students can specialize in Latin language and literature, Greek language and literature, or a blend of both. Alternatively, they may explore ancient civilizations through translated texts and secondary sources, or concentrate on Classical Archaeology and material artifacts.
