The Classical Archaeology Concentration allows students to explore the material remains of ancient Mediterranean civilizations. This program integrates approaches and materials from literature, art history, anthropology, and archaeological studies.
UMass Classics boasts a dynamic and expanding undergraduate curriculum. Students can select from an extensive range of courses: beyond comprehensive instruction in ancient Greek and Latin, we offer numerous Classical Civilization courses taught in translation, including Greek Mythology, Greek Drama, Greco-Roman Culture, Ancient Magic, Epic Poetry, Greek Religion, Women in Antiquity, Etruscan Civilization, and Classical Painting, plus multiple archaeology-focused classes. Our robust Honors Program enables majors to develop exceptional senior theses and projects. Numerous students join Eta Sigma Phi, the national classics honor society, where our chapter balances academic pursuits with social events and community initiatives. Past activities have featured visits to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, yearly book sales, and university service projects like complimentary Latin and Greek tutoring.
