For students seeking direct engagement with ancient literature and culture, or those preparing for graduate studies in Greek or Latin. Those aiming for competitive graduate programs should complete at least three years of advanced coursework in either ancient Greek or Latin, plus an additional year in the complementary language.
Classical studies is an interdisciplinary major offering three tracks: ancient languages, classical civilization, and teacher certification, all providing education in Greek and Roman history, literature, and culture. These tracks require Latin or ancient Greek proficiency. A fourth modern Greek track focuses on contemporary Greek language, literature, and culture, requiring modern Greek skills. The ancient language track is ideal for students wanting firsthand experience with classical texts and culture, or planning graduate work in Greek or Latin. Competitive graduate programs typically expect applicants to have three years of upper-level courses in one classical language plus a year in the other.
