Classics appeal to all, and students pursuing this major join a welcoming Department that combines the advantages of a small liberal arts college within a major state university. Faculty members know their students personally, and the Director of Undergraduate Studies collaborates with each individual to select courses aligned with their academic passions and professional aspirations.
While some Classics graduates pursue teaching or academic careers, this field is not solely vocational. The Department provides a well-rounded liberal arts education, cultivating an environment that honors traditional scholarly methods while embracing fresh perspectives. Emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches, the program promotes a holistic understanding of antiquity through history, literature, and material culture. Students explore Classics both within traditional humanities frameworks and through modern critiques of cultural legacies. Every course prioritizes analytical reasoning, precise evaluation, and strong communication skills.
Many Classics majors advance to graduate programs in philology or archaeology, with the Department boasting strong placement records. Others enter teaching or museum careers—FSU takes pride in educating most of Florida's Latin instructors (with national demand currently outpacing qualified candidates). Importantly, the liberal arts foundation equips graduates for diverse professions. Alumni excel in law, business, medicine, journalism, advertising, publishing, theater, and legal fields. Notably, one Classics graduate earned FSU's sole Rhodes Scholarship.
