The Classics Department provides a major with three distinct focus areas. Students can select from concentrations in Greek and Latin Language and Literature, Latin Language and Literature, or Classical Civilization. We recommend discussing major selection and program planning with our Classics faculty members.

For the Greek and Latin Language and Literature track, proficiency in both ancient languages is required. This program aims to develop linguistic skills efficiently, enabling students to explore significant Classical texts in their original form by the completion of first-year Greek or Latin. Subsequent coursework focuses on interpreting the literary works of ancient Greece and Rome. Alongside language mastery, students deepen their understanding of classical literature, history, and philosophy through intensive study of seminal authors.

The Latin Language and Literature concentration caters to students specializing in Roman studies and the Latin language. After completing introductory Latin, students begin analyzing foundational Latin texts. While developing advanced Latin skills, students also explore Roman history and culture through upper-level Classical Civilization courses centered on Rome, additional Latin coursework, or approved classes from other Humanities departments examining later periods significantly shaped by Roman traditions (like medieval studies).
