The Classics program at the University of Maryland allows students to explore the rich cultural heritage of ancient Greece and Rome while developing expertise in their histories, languages, religions, political systems, and gender dynamics. Our curriculum focuses on rigorous analysis of Western civilization, helping students refine their critical thinking and communication skills—essential abilities for professional success or further academic pursuits. Alumni pursue careers in diverse fields including law, education, healthcare, technology, and public service. The undergraduate program features three specialization options: Classical Humanities, Latin, or a combined Latin-Greek track. Numerous courses satisfy General Education and Core requirements. Students seeking a robust liberal arts foundation without intending to specialize in Classics may select any track, while aspiring Latin educators should pursue either Latin track. Those planning graduate studies in Classics, ancient history, or philosophy are advised to choose the combined Latin-Greek option.
High school students and students with fewer than 12 semester hours or 18 quarter hours of university-level credit beyond secondary school should apply as freshman applicants.
