The Ancient Greek Language and Literature Major concentration is designed for students interested in exploring classical Greek texts and language to engage with seminal works of Western civilization. No previous language or grammar knowledge is required. The program focuses primarily on reading and translation skills rather than conversational ability. During initial coursework, students work with excerpts from Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, historical texts by Thucydides and Herodotus, Plato's philosophical writings, plays by Sophocles and Euripides, legal documents, and New Testament scriptures including the Gospels and Epistles. As proficiency develops in advanced semesters, students examine more extensive passages.
