The Classical Studies Major offers two distinct pathways: Classical Language and Classical Cultures. The Language track focuses on exploring antiquity through Latin and Greek, whereas the Cultures track highlights the interdisciplinary nature of Classical Studies, incorporating ancient literature, art, performance, science, and other fields.
These pathways aim to guide your academic focus while maintaining flexibility - students in the Cultures track can still enroll in language courses, and those in the Language track are encouraged (and expected) to take non-language classes.
Key consideration: Prospective graduate students in Classical Studies or Ancient History should note that most programs mandate at least three years of Greek and Latin. If considering advanced study in these areas, consult your advisor early.
The Cultures track caters to students desiring a wide-ranging classical education without plans for graduate work in Classics. This option enables exploration of history, art, religion, and literature while developing comprehensive understanding of the ancient Mediterranean. Through examining ancient responses to timeless human issues, students gain applicable knowledge and skills for modern challenges.
