Our institution provides a Master of Arts in Near Eastern Studies, featuring specializations in advanced languages, international relations, and museum studies. Additionally, we offer a combined MA in Global Journalism and a dual degree in Library Science. We maintain strong collaborations with the Department of Middle Eastern Studies, which runs an independent Ph.D. program.
The curriculum emphasizes the modern political economy, regional cultures, and historical developments influencing current realities. Students explore contemporary history, politics, and specialized subjects aligned with faculty expertise. Current research areas encompass economic and political rights, legal and social systems, gender dynamics, Arabic literature, Iranian literary traditions, urban anthropology in Arab contexts, Ottoman and Arab state development, Egyptian societal evolution, and modern Iran and Central Asia. The program also includes coursework on pre-modern Islamic history, philosophy, literature, and ancient Near Eastern civilizations.
Language education is a priority, with cutting-edge courses in Arabic, Persian, Hebrew, Turkish, Hindi/Urdu, and ancient regional languages. Numerous students participate in intensive summer language programs domestically or internationally.
The Museum Studies concentration within the Near Eastern Studies MA prepares students for careers in museums and cultural institutions, while also serving professionals seeking formal training. Beyond core requirements, participants must complete a full summer internship at a museum or cultural organization (non-credit).
