The Henry Kendall College of Arts & Sciences partners with the Gilcrease Museum and multiple TU campus departments to deliver a cross-disciplinary Master of Arts (M.A.) program in museum science and management. This Museum Science and Management (MSM) program combines academic study with practical training, equipping students for careers in museum administration, financial operations, collections management, and educational programming. Participants develop skills in utilizing artifacts for research, exhibitions, publications, and public programs while learning essential museum leadership and fundraising strategies. The curriculum includes internships at prominent cultural institutions to provide specialized field experience.

TU faculty, Gilcrease Museum professionals, and industry experts jointly offer specialized training in American art curation, archaeological conservation, ethnological studies, and archival management. Required program workshops guide students in professional development and career advancement topics.
Our interdisciplinary minor serves students from diverse academic backgrounds seeking expertise in museum studies, cultural heritage, and preservation. The curriculum provides fundamental knowledge for careers in cultural institutions, covering material culture curation (including ethnographic, artistic, and historical objects), daily museum functions, and contemporary museological theories and ethical considerations.

Qualification Requirements

Writing sample that demonstrates the student's research and/or critical thinking skills.
Undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0. Students who do not satisfy this requirement but have at least a 3.0 GPA in their major field may be admitted on probation by the Graduate School upon the recommendation of the Graduate Program Advisor. Probationary status is removed by completing nine credit hours of approved graduate study with a GPA of 3.0 or higher in one semester for a full-time student and within three semesters for a part-time student.
Letters of recommendation from at least three professors or former supervisors who are familiar with the applicant's technical background, work performance, and academic potential.
Statement of purpose that includes a description of the applicant's background, rationale for the desired track, specific interests in museum science and management, and long-term professional objectives.
