Mississippi State University's doctoral counseling program enhances students' existing expertise in counseling or related fields, equipping them for roles as skilled practitioners, academic researchers, scholars, administrators, professional leaders, and exceptional educators and clinical supervisors. Grounded in the scientist-practitioner approach, the program fosters critical analysis, practical application of theory, hands-on learning, academic research, advocacy and social justice engagement, and professional leadership development.
This structured, progressive curriculum features advanced studies in counseling fundamentals, specialization options, electives, clinical placements, rigorous research and statistics training, comprehensive examinations, and dissertation completion. Core coursework covers advanced topics like clinical supervision, multicultural proficiency, assessment techniques, instructional methods, advocacy, ethical practice, consultation, research methodology, and analytical reasoning. Candidates also select a minor or focus area from any graduate discipline outside their primary field, allowing interdisciplinary exploration. Additionally, the program requires 900 hours of supervised clinical practice in settings aligned with each student's specialization.
