The CACREP-accredited doctoral program in Counselor Education focuses on assessing counseling theory and practice through both quantitative and qualitative research while training future educators and leaders in the counseling profession. Doctoral candidates engage in specialized seminars on counseling research topics, complete coursework in statistics and research methods, participate in counseling practicums and internships, and select advisor-approved electives. This program aims to enhance students' capabilities through innovative learning experiences, fostering critical thinking and a well-defined research focus. Faculty members provide dedicated mentorship to support professional growth and personal accomplishments. Ideal candidates possess substantial counseling experience across various settings and show promise in both research and practical applications of counselor education. Program alumni typically pursue careers as university educators, contribute original research to the field, work as skilled counselor supervisors, and assume leadership roles in professional organizations.

The William & Mary School of Education receives applications each year from all over the world, and we understand the difficulties students have communicating with higher education institutions that are in a different country. Because we value international students, we hope to make the admission procedure as smooth as possible for everyone.
Although a minimum score for admission has not been issued, international students who are typically admitted score at least 100 on the Internet version of the TOEFL (or comparable score on other versions of the exam) or a 7.0 on the IELTS, or a score of 95 on the Duolingo English Test.
