The Africana Studies Program aims to foster in Lehigh students a scholarly understanding of sub-Saharan African cultures and their global diaspora, particularly in the Americas (including the U.S., Canada, the Caribbean, and Central/South America). This enhances Lehigh's curriculum while addressing the needs of our diverse society. True to liberal arts principles, Africana Studies broadens students' critical perspectives by examining their own heritage alongside other cultures.
The interdisciplinary Africana Studies major and minor allow undergraduates to combine multiple academic approaches to explore the historical, cultural, social, and political experiences of global African-descended populations.
Our comprehensive curriculum equips graduates for various professional paths. Africana Studies alumni have pursued successful careers in arts, legal fields, government, education, and more, specializing in areas like migration, criminal justice reform, and social advocacy. Students are encouraged to consult with program advisors to explore how Africana Studies applies to diverse career opportunities.
