The Epidemiology doctoral program is grounded in public health and population-based studies. Candidates employ epidemiological techniques to investigate intricate health challenges. The PhD involves two years of academic study plus a minimum of two years dedicated to research. Participants must fulfill teaching requirements, including a training curriculum and serving as teaching assistants for methodological and subject-specific courses. The program also mandates a written comprehensive examination, a mock oral exam, preliminary testing, numerous oral and poster presentations, culminating in a dissertation with its defense.
The Infectious Disease specialization expands on fundamental epidemiology training to cultivate expertise in disease patterns, analytical and lab techniques, immunology, and pathogen science. This equips students to examine relationships between infectious organisms and their hosts, vectors, and surroundings. Scholars and instructors explore optimal approaches for detecting and quantifying infections, analyzing transmission patterns, and creating/evaluating intervention strategies for both emerging and persistent infections like HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C, HPV, malaria, measles, TB, flu, and COVID-19. Enrollees gain from microbiology and immunology classes, epidemiological and statistical training, plus diverse infectious disease coursework across departments. The program facilitates participation in faculty-led domestic and global research initiatives in Infectious Disease Epidemiology.
